Between the growing outbreak of Corona and the lockdown due to this, a two-day important meeting of the Finance Commission in the country is going to start from today i.e. Thursday. In this meeting, the financial health of states due to Corona epidemic, the impact of Corona on GDP, and a change in strategy for this can be discussed.

Significantly, due to the outbreak of Kovid 19, economic activities have come to a complete standstill and revenue collection has also come to the ground. At such a time, on 23-24 April, the Economic Advisory Council of the Fifteenth Finance Commission is going to have an important meeting. The Economic Advisory Council is an institution appointed under the constitution whose job is to assess the financial condition of states and union territories and to determine the share of tax revenue between the center and the states.

What is the demand of the states

Due to declining sources of revenue, the economic condition of the states is poor and they are expecting more tax revenue from the central government. Apart from this, on various issues like relief package for power and many important sectors, the Reserve Bank's EMI postponement facility, waiving GST on essential commodities like coal, the states have also placed their demand before the PM.

The impact of GDP will be discussed

In this meeting, 'The impact of the Corona epidemic on GDP in the years 2020-21 and 2021-22 and the uncertainty of the macro economy can be discussed.'

The 15th Finance Commission, headed by former bureaucrat NK Singh, chairman of the 15th Finance Commission, has submitted a report containing its recommendations for the financial year 2020-21 on 1 February this year. But the five-year final report for 2021-26 was to be submitted by the commission by 30 October this year. But due to Corona, all the financial schemes have been eclipsed and the commission will have to do a whole new exercise for its next report.

Due to the lockdown during March-April, retail sales and other economic momentum methods were almost at a standstill and due to this the tax collection from GST and other sources is expected to be completely rolled out. The sale of alcohol and fuel, which is considered the main source of revenue of the states, is also stalled.

Meeting will be online

A senior official of the Commission said that this time the meeting with the Chairman of the 15th Finance Commission will be online and on 23 April it will consist of 5 members of the Advisory Council - Chief Economic Advisor Dr. Krishnamurthy Subramaniam, Dr. Sajid Z. Chinoy, Dr. Prachi Mishra, Neelkanth Mishra and Dr. Omkar Goswami. The meeting with the rest of the members will be held on the next day i.e. 24 April.
