Amid prevalent chaos and uncertainty over access to the essential services and commodities during the lockdown, we bring you the latest updates from your city.
PTI update at 10.45pm: Two teams of the Union government on Saturday met local officials in Ahmedabad and Surat districts of Gujarat where the number of coronavirus cases has risen sharply in the last few days.
PTI update at 9.00pm: No shops will be open in six out of 48 wards in Ahmedabad, Gujarat's worst coronavirus-hit city, as these are part of containment zones created to control the COVID-19 outbreak, civic officials said on Saturday, a day after the Centre allowed conditional opening of shops amid the nationwide lockdown. The Gujarat government has allowed standalone shops to operate across the state from Sunday, except in areas declared cluster containment zones by local authorities.
Update at 8.00pm: Covid-19: Six deaths, 256 new cases recorded in Gujarat today; total in the state reaches 3071.

Update at 6.30pm: Five persons including Surat returned nurse who was tested positive for Covid-19 on 12 April night, were booked in Subir police station of Dang district for lockdown violation.

Update at 5.30pm: A 65-year-old farmer from Navsari's Nasilpore village tested positive for Covid-19. This is the fourth positive case in Navsari district
Update at 5.00pm: A 32-year-old native of Kalamkui village in Valod taluka of Tapi district who works as multi purpose health worker at Primary Health Centre (PHC) at Kamlapur's sub-center in Naren in Surat district, tested positive for Covid-19 on Saturday
Update at 4.15pm: Following MHA order, Gujarat government announced to allow re-opening of majority category shops in non-contaminated areas following strict social distancing norms and with 50% staff. Shops in Covid-19 containment areas will remain closed.
PTI update at 4.00pm: The number of coronavirus positive patients in Gujarat doubled from 617 after April 14 to 1,272 on April 17, but this rate slowed down in the subsequent six days up to April 23 during which 1352 more cases were detected, as per the analysis by Health department.

*While in-person meetings between prisoners and their relatives no longer allowed due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Ahmedabad Central Jail has started ‘e-meetings’ for its inmates.

*Gujarat high court has permitted a litigant to serve notice on another party through WhatsApp, because serving hard copy of the notice might be difficult during the lockdown. Because of the lockdown in place to check the spread of Covid-19, the HC has for the first time started e-filing of petitions and affidavits.
*11.50am: We will easily implement the decision to open shops in rural areas. But as far as implementation in urban areas is concerned, we'll do it as per conditions in centre's notification. * Local shops in areas not sealed can open: Centre
The Union home ministry on Friday permitted all shops in residential and market complexes outside municipal limits and all neighbourhood, standalone shops as well as shops in residential complexes within municipal limits of non-containment zones to open during the lockdown. The opening of shops would be subject to the conditions that these shops will operate with 50% staff strength of workers and wearing of face masks and adherence to social distancing norms will be mandatory. However, shops located in market places within municipal limits will continue to remain shut till May 3.

*09.23am: Death toll due to Covid-19 rises to 775, cases climb to 24,506 in India: Union health ministry
*CM Vijay Rupani said the state is the first in the country in tests per million population. “We are not worried about becoming the state with the highest or second highest number of Covid-19 patients,” he said. “We are worried about identifying all corona positive persons and treating them.”
*Even as fear is being expressed that the Covid-19 outbreak in the state is spiralling out of control, chief minister Vijay Rupani issued a video statement on Friday to assure people that the state will soon overcome the crisis.
*Municipal commissioner Vijay Nehra called on younger people to take special care of senior citizens who are particularly vulnerably to Covid-19 and implored social media influencers to use their creativity to spread this important message.
*In 24 hours ending 5pm on April 24, the city and district added 169 positive cases and 14 deaths to its tally – taking it higher at 1,821 and 83 respectively. Approximately, one death was recorded every 102 minutes (1 hour 42 minutes) while in the same time 14 cases were added in the tally.

*At least 550 industrial units in Vatva, Naroda, Narol and Odhav industrial areas of the city have been granted permission to resume operations from Saturday onwards. The state government on Thursday allowed units in city limits with export commitments to reopen. The units that have bagged approvals for resumption of their operations in the city are engaged in dyes, chemicals and engineering good among others.
*It is not just industrial and commercial establishments that are passing through a difficult period because of the lockdown. The state government’s revenue in the form of stamp duty and registration of properties too has been hit hard with government reportedly incurring losses to the tune of Rs 1,300 crore due to negligible real estate transactions.
