Are We Truly Independent?

At the stroke of midnight,  on August 15th 1947,  everything changed for us as a nation. India was declared independent after 200 years of colonial rule,  India got independent from class-based discrimination,  the nation got independent from the long going religious hatred. When all was said and done we rise as a nation together,  with the spirit of patriotism running high at its the peak, with a sense of brotherhood favouring each soul.

But,  somewhere amidst this victory,  a fire of hatred existed,  somewhere deep down,  at the bottom of hearts,  nothing was truly changed,  and that has been unfolded with the communal riots that soon grasped the nation. Thousands of household disrupted, And tens of thousands perished since then. After 73 years of Independence,  the Indian society cannot even claim to be free from the caste-based discrimination, let alone religious discrimination.

Over the years the political, as well as the social scenario of the country, have only widened the bridge between harmony and peace,  India may be the most diverse country on the world but it no sense does it imply that as a society it respects that diversity.

Freedom is a mentality,  that needs to be grasped by all. A society can only excel in a positive direction if it is liberated from prejudice and intolerance

Independence is not only about the right to freedom of expression. Freedom of expression is not a freedom to abuse those who do not agree with you. Freedom is the right to be one’s self and that too without hurting the same rights of others.
